When Siemens Energy moved its gas turbine manufacturing from Hamilton, Ontario, to Charlotte, the company quickly realized it had a challenge.

“We found out real fast that the more technical positions, there was no one available (to hire),” said Roger Collins, the company’s apprenticeship manager.

Collins, a graduate of an apprenticeship program, knew the training model could help meet Siemens Energy’s needs. So, he worked with ApprenticeshipNC to establish a program.

“It’s personal to me, and I know the impact that an apprenticeship in the trades can have on your life,” Collins said. “And I see it every day in my apprentices.”

His advice for companies thinking about starting an apprenticeship? “Don’t think too long. It’s real easy to think yourself out of it.” Collins said. “There’s no hurdle that cannot be overcome by your company with the assistance of ApprenticeshipNC.”
